After a short climb we entered Lassen Volcanic National Park. One of the first trail junctions took us to Terminal Geyser, which isn't really a geyser, but a steam vent. We could smell the sulfur from a mile away, but couldn't see it until we came around a corner. The vent heated up the water so much it was still steaming 500 yards downstream. After the geyser, we came across Boiling Springs Lake, a noxious looking green lake with mudpots around the edge. The mudpots were bubbling fiercely from the volcanic gasses escaping the ground. After the lake the hike was pretty standard, if not a bit easier than normal. It was mostly level for the rest of the day, with one small climb and descent. Tomorrow we will enter the dreaded Hat Creek Rim, the second longest dry stretch of the PCT.
